If you would like to get a Pedigreed Cat, here are a few important Guidelines to Follow. Approach this Prospect or Idea with a High Degree of Commitment. Most Reputable Breeders will be "checking you out," just as much as you are they.
One of the best ways to find a reputable breeder is to go to a local CFA or TICA cat show.
DO NOT rely on internet searches. You can get burned.
Decide whether you want a longhair or shorthair. Go to the CFA and TICA websites and research the different breeds. Understand that a shorthair cat doesn't mean you will not have the issue of "hair." You just won't have as much. Hypoallergenic? The Siberian breed is the only TRUE hypoallergenic cat breed.
When you find a breeder, ask if their cats are registered with CFA or TICA. Are they a cattery that is registered/licensed with either of those organizations?
A Purchase Agreement is a MUST. The following is an example of a Breeder Quote: "We require all potential 'cat parents' to review and sign a detailed sales contract. The contract is fairly detailed and states in part that the cat must not be declawed or allowed outdoors. All kittens leave fully vaccinated for FVRCP, and have been examined by a licensed veterinarian and with a health and genetic health guarantee. Our catteries are FeLV and FIV negative. All of our cats are registered with CFA."
Make sure the seller puts in writing that they are a ringworm and FIP free cattery. If they cannot give you this guarantee or make excuses why this is not possible, then consider your pursuit of that seller OVER and DONE! It doesn't matter how beautiful their cats may be, you have to protect yourself. Ask the seller if they test for HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy). HCM is more common in some breeds than others.
COST -- For a pet quality kitten, expect to pay a minimum of $500-800. A reputable breeder will not sell/release a kitten until age four months. A reputable breeder will only sell a kitten with registration papers, upon proof of neutering/spaying by your veterinarian in writing. The initial expenditure can easily be over $1000 after travel expenses (driving, flying to pick up your new feline, shipping), Vet fees with neuter/spay, vaccinations and medical exam within the first week on arrival in their new home.
Show quality or breeding quality kittens/cats are sold only to select buyers who are serious about developing a cattery with breed specific standards.
With a little patience, time and effort, you will find the purrfect pedigreed cat to complement your home and lives. >:<
THANKYOUÂ FORÂ VISITINGÂ AMERI-KANÂ CATTERY
Animals have a unique way of enriching our lives. I have often wondered why God preserved many more animals on the Ark than He did people. I get the part about the Creator sustaining species of the animal kingdom but the role they played in the Ark is pretty amazing. Noah and his family were consumed with the responsibility of their daily care. We also see in the Bible the role animals play in heaven.

Cats have been used in animal therapy. And we all have heard the stories of the cat(s) who saved its human family by alerting them to an unsuspected fire in the home. Studies have shown how people's treatment and attitudes towards animals correlates to how they treat other human beings.

If you look close enough, you can see the life lessons we can learn from animals. Growing up on a Kansas farm gave me the blessed opportunity to see first hand how animals can impact our lives. I learned to respect and love them. The cats saved our grain from hoards of rats and mice. Our existence was dependent on the lives of our farm animals.
There are many cat sanctuaries around the world. One of the most unique is Lanai CAT Sanctuary in Hawaii. It is an island all of its own where over 600 cats are cared for. People travel from all over the world to HAWAII just to see the cats of Lana'i. Another outstanding global work is AlleyCatAllies.
